Workshop for Women

The 2014 CWsWiSE workshop will take place in conjunction with the 2014 Applied Superconductivity Conference on Sunday, August 10, 2014 in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Westin Charlotte Hotel. This workshop is intended for graduate students, early career researchers, professionals already established their field as well as anyone who wants to have access to the three “keys” to success – communication, confidence and commitment. Included in the program are networking events with successful women in science that will introduce and excite female professionals about the opportunities available to women around the world. Giving women, especially students, access to successful women executives in science and applied superconductivity will aid in the pursuit and advancement of successful careers in science and engineering fields and offer exposure to real life applications of applied superconductivity.

Registration Fee: Complimentary (Includes breakfast, break, lunch and materials.) The complimentary fee has been made possible by the IEEE Council on Superconductivity.

Instructors:

KAmm   Dr. Kathleen Amm obtained her Ph.D.-Condensed Matter Physics from Florida State University, and a B.Sc.-Mathematics and Physics-University of Toronto. She has over 18 years of experience in superconductivity and magnet design, and has published over 17 peer-reviewed publications and 13 patents in cryogenics and superconductivity. Her primary research areas of interest include: MRI and medical applications of superconductivity, superconducting electric machines, high temperature superconductivity, material properties at low temperatures, and permanent magnets. Kathleen is currently the Technology Leader for MRI Technologies and Systems at GE Global Research where she works with her team to deliver innovative MR and superconducting technologies to GE businesses.
   

 

CFoley   Dr. Cathy Foley was appointed Chief at CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) Division in April 2011. She is also the first woman to be elected as President of the Australian Institute of Physics in its 44 year history. Dr Foley leads CSIRO’s work in materials physics, instrumentation, engineering and the Advanced Materials Research Platform. Dr Foley has a world-class reputation in her field, and is the President of the Federation of Australian Scientific and Technological Societies (FASTS), a member of the Prime Minister’s Science and Engineering Innovation Council (PMSEIC) and Fellow of the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ASTE). “In addition to materials research, I am also very interested in science in the media, science education and women in science and engineering,” Dr Foley said. Dr Foley has a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, as well as a Bachelor of Science (Honours), Diploma of Education from Macquarie University, Sydney, New South Wales.
