The IEEE Dr. James Wong Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions to Applied Superconductor Materials Technology (New)

Description
This Award recognize a living individual for a career of meritorious achievements and outstanding technical contributions in the field of applied superconductor materials technology, over a period of time (nominally more than twenty years) based on novel and innovative concepts and theories proposed by the individual, the authorship or co-authorship of many publications of major significance to the field of applied superconductor materials technology, and the impact that the candidate’s contributions have had on the development and maturing of applied superconductivity. This Award is named for Dr. James Wong who received the IEEE CSC Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity in 2011 for his pioneering work in producing commercial grade superconducting cables and conductors. In 1962, Dr. Wong founded Supercon, Inc. which has produced a variety of niobium-titanium and niobium-tin superconducting wires, cables and conductors for many commercial and research application, and has supplied production quantities of high-quality superconducting wire for a longer time than any other company in the world.

Eligibility
The recipient must have been active in the field of applied superconductivity for at least twenty years, and must be able to attend the international conference related to applied superconductivity at which the Award will be made. The recipient does not have to be a member of the IEEE and there shall be no restrictions based on nationality, country of residence, age or gender. An individual may receive only one IEEE Council on Superconductivity sponsored Award for his/her contributions to superconductor materials science and technology.

Prize
The Award shall consist of the following: (1) a medallion fabricated from niobium, at least six centimeters in diameter and suitably engraved; (2) a suitably inscribed plaque; and, (3) an honorarium of U.S. $5,000.

Status
This is a newly established Award that will be presented, for the first time, in 2014.

Nomination Procedure
Nominations of candidates for the IEEE Council on Superconductivity Awards can be made by land or electronic mail directly to the Chair of the Awards Committee by any member of the applied superconductivity community (defined as anyone who has attended at least five previous international conferences on applied superconductivity). Members of the Awards Committee may also nominate candidates for the Award.

The nomination documentation shall consist of a nomination letter, a detailed curriculum vita (CV) and completed Nomination Form. The CV should contain detailed contact information for the candidate, the candidate’s educational and employment background, a list of honors, awards and other recognitions (both from IEEE and other organizations) that the candidate has received, and a list of his professional duties that document the role the candidate has played in advancing the science, technology and/or commercialization of applied superconductivity. The Nominator must also complete an IEEE CSC Award Nomination Form by identifying three (or four) major contributions the candidate has made toward the advancement of applied superconductivity and describe the impact of these significant scientific, technological or management accomplishments have had on the field of applied superconductivity. The Nomination Form may be obtained from the Chair of the CSC Awards Committee (see below for contact information).

The Nomination Form and CV must be accompanied by at least three but not more than six endorsements from other members of the applied superconductivity (defined as anyone who has attended at least five previous international conferences on applied superconductivity). The endorsements can be made by co-signing the cover letter accompanying the Nomination Form or by separate messages citing the name of the candidate and the name of the Nominator.

The Chair of the CSC Awards Committee must receive the nomination letter and the letters of endorsement at the address below no later than 11:59 p.m. (UTC) on February 28th of the year in which an applied superconductivity conference is held.
