Student Program
Dear ASC 2012 Student Attendee:
The 2012 Applied Superconductivity Conference has organized a special agenda with activities for graduate students. Surveys at past conferences have demonstrated that these initiatives positively increased students’ personal and professional interest in seeking careers in the superconductor community. All students who are interested in careers in areas covered by the Applied Superconductivity Conference are invited to participate.
The Conference encourages students who are budget conscious to consider staying at the Quality Inn Downtown Convention Center (formerly La Quinta Inn) where the nightly rate is US $106 plus 12.5% tax for single or double occupancy. This rate includes breakfast. The hotel has an indoor pool.
A special Student Information Desk will be manned at the Oregon Convention Center on Sunday through Thursday of the conference. Information about student activities will be posted at the desk, and students can sign up for a variety of social activities. The office is located near ASC registration.
Two special sessions are planned for student attendees – one lunch session and one evening session. The lunch session, sponsored by organizations and companies below, will give students the opportunity to meet top experts on U.S. and international projects and commercial applications related to superconducting materials and applications as well as learn more about job opportunities. Boxed lunch will be provided, and students need to sign up in advance. During the evening session, students will be exposed to a general technical introduction of the presented projects and hear about specific details regarding their potential contribution, i.e. how they can directly be involved, what career opportunities are available, etc. The evening session will have four invited presentations dedicated to governmental projects and on commercial applications and the private sector. There will be time for dialog, and light food and beverage will be provided, courtesy of our sponsors. Sign-up is also required.
Other informal evening activities may include a visit to some of Portland’s many microbreweries. These events provide an opportunity for networking, so come and meet others who have interests similar to yours.
Finally, students are invited to the Farewell Reception to be held on Thursday evening. We look forward to meeting you at ASC!
